The exam involves no pain or discomfort and only takes about two minutes to complete. The VELscope system uses a light that targets the inside of your mouth, illuminating any suspicious tissue that could be pre-cancerous lesions. Survival rates for oral cancer are very high when it is caught early. Oral cancer screenings should be undertaken at least once a year for those who do not use tobacco products, and twice a year for those who smoke and/or chew tobacco.
